Dr William Fawcett of Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd, one of the CILECCTA partners, presented a paper called 'Sustainable Construction Projects: case study of flexible strategies for long-term sustainability under uncertainty'. The paper was co-authored by Hannes Kriegand Stefan Albrecht of the University of Stuttgart, Dr Martin Hughes of Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd and Dr Anders Vennström of Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. The paper outlined CILECCTA's innovative approach to life-cycle evaluation – the linking of money-based and environmentally-based evaluation (LCC and LCA), the adoption of a probabilistic approach, and the evaluation flexible design alternatives. It presented a worked example that combined all these innovative features. This was about the efficient specification of thermal insulation when the future price of fuel is uncertain. The case study findings demonstrated the value of flexibility.
In the closing session of SB11, the CILECCTA paper was highlighted as one of the best five papers at the conference (out of380presented). The respected journal Building Research & Information will publish the paper in a forthcoming special issue on SB11. |
