Life expectancy of components is integral to life cycle costing, but owners and operators of buildings can't be certain how long components and systems will really last. That is, until now. The article sheds some light on what published data is available on the longevity of components

BSRIA was provided with an opportunity to research life expectancy probabilities for building services components, towards a work package for the Construction Industry LifE Cycle CosT Analysis (CILECCTA) European research project. The goal of the project is to create a user-oriented, knowledge-based software that is capable of full life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA). The BSRIA deliverable for the work package was the production of life expectancy distribution curves for input to the CILECCTA software.

The project initiated with a search for data sources that could yield life expectancy distribution curves for mechanical and electrical building components.
