Civil Engineering - APIA XXI

Case: Road section study developed by APIA XXI for Gestó d’Infraestructures S.A.U. in the autonomous community of Cataluña, Spain in 2011.

APIA XXI Group is a large Spanish company within engineering, construction and technology development. The demo case is based on a road section made for Gestó d’Infraestructures S.A.U. in 2011.

When construction of a road is to take place, there are many things that must be carefully considered. Because of specific traffic range and usage of a certain road, the engineers are forced to take decisions on the pavement structure which will suit the specific needs in each area. Many categories connected to strength and use patterns must be considered before the road can be produced. For the CILECCTA demo case is the road structure chosen to be of the Heavy Traffic Category T1 and the type of soil underlying the esplanade used is stated as Tolerable Soil. This initial scenario can further be compared with several flexibility options and alternatives to stand up to future possible increases in traffic levels. Spending more at the initial construction will mean that future upgrades will be less expensive.

The road connected to the demo case was developed during2011 and the design principles used follow the criteria and regulations currently in force.
